Natural Remedies to Treat Eczema
Eczema is a chronic skin condition characterized by red, itchy, scaly or dry rashes. Skin blisters with crusting and oozing are common. This disorder is not contagious. Though it can affect anyone, it is most common in children, with visible signs of rashes appearing on the elbows, knees, and cheeks. Using natural treatments to cure eczema is the only solution to keep the symptoms at bay, as there is no definite treatment.
Eczema natural treatments include:
1. Probiotics
Probiotics, or good bacteria, are living microbial organisms found naturally in the digestive tract. They supposedly control the growth of harmful bacteria, affect immune function, and make the protective barrier of the digestive tract stronger.
Studies reveal that babies have a higher risk of allergic disorders such as eczema because of the presence of harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. It is believed that probiotic supplements can reduce the risk of eczema in children. Pregnant women can also take probiotics as a preventive measure.
2. Evening primrose oil
This is obtained from the evening primrose plant. It is applied topically to soothe skin irritation.
When ingested, it may be effective in treating systemic inflammatory conditions such as eczema. It also contains gamma-linolenic acid and omega-6 fatty acids that combat inflammation.
Studies have shown that evening primrose oil is a great natural treatment option for eczema as it might reduce symptoms without causing any negative side effects.
3. Aloe vera gel
Aloe vera gel is a natural cure for many skin conditions, including eczema. Aloe vera has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. It is effective for healing wounds and boosting the immune system.
Choose aloe vera products without preservatives such as alcohol, colors, and fragrances. Preservatives may cause skin irritation and worsen eczema.
4. Colloidal oatmeal
Colloidal oatmeal is made from ground and rolled oats. It helps soften and calm inflamed skin and is great for eczema.
Colloidal oatmeal can be found in the form of powder or cream. Add the powder to lukewarm bath water and soak for 15 minutes for softer skin. This also helps relieve itching.
5. Coconut oil
Coconut oil is a good natural treatment as it contains good fats and fatty acids that moisturize the skin. It helps relieve skin dryness. Virgin coconut oil also protects skin by fighting inflammation and improves skin health.
The National Eczema Association suggests that the antibacterial properties of coconut oil reduce staph bacteria from the skin and prevents infection. It is important for eczema patients as the inflammation and patches may crack and even ooze, making way for bacteria.
6. Acupressure and acupuncture
Acupressure is a traditional therapy that uses hands and fingers to apply pressure to different parts of the body to help heal it. Preliminary research shows that acupressure may relieve symptoms of eczema.
On the other hand, acupuncture is a similar practice but with needles. Needles are inserted in the body, at specific points, to change energy flow. Even though more research is required, some studies show that acupuncture may induce itch relief.
A combination of eczema natural treatments and self-care is all you need to manage this condition.
